Campaign off the starting blocks

The petition has got off to a good start, with powerful comments from TAs and others about the dire consequences for pupils if teaching assistant jobs are targeted in the public spending cuts.

  1. who will be the ones to give help to those children that cannot access the curriculum and all the children who are being intergrated into main stream school with special needs. if the government are thinking of going a head with schools being ran by parents who will give them the training to deal with those children whos needs are more specialised or will they chose only the children of friends and family where as in a school we have been properly trained to deal withose situations. Come on government open yours eyes and see what the TA's of this country do in are schools .WE DESERVE CREDIT NOT TO BE DISCREDITED.

  3. The Government are living up to their coalition name 'CONDEM'. What are they trying to do? I have been a qualified NNEB since 1977 and have worked in schools frequently since then. The education system has changed numerous times in the last 30+ years. Some things are better, some worse, some have been in vogue, gone out and come back in again with a new name. Throughout these changes TAs have been valuable resources. The way education is now and the demands of the curriculum mean more well educated, trained staff with the opportunity to enhance skills post qualification is even more important.
Children and parents identify with TAs as they are seen as more approachable and understanding often because they have children of their own. Many teachers are now much older before they begin families and don't have the same understanding and empathy as TAs.

Mr Gove come and work in a classroom at my school. 26 5 to 6 yr olds with a variety of meeds, autism, deafness, diabetic and behaviour difficulties, children who have lost a parent, sibling through death. Show me how you would cope with all of these difficulties and teach the curriculum to an acceptable standard without the help of a TA. Are you up for the challenge. Can you walk the walk or just talk the talk?
TAs are valuable to all schools to support the children, the staff, parents and the community. Don't mess up our children's future.

  4. I have just done 5 days assessment to do my HLTA course specialising in Food Technology. Now you have cut my funding. Teenagers love to cook, but so many need support to do it as they have little life skills and they need to be safe while in my care.I work with fantastic teachers but they have so much paperwork, large classes and challenging pupils. My job helps them enormously. I love my job and as the children are our future, we need to make their learning and development as excellent as we can. Some have SEN's, others just need our guidence, care and patience.Ask the pupils what they think if they didn't have us to turn to. We all go beyond the call of duty to care for our teenagers and guide them to a better future.

  5. I have 2 children in mainstream school who have SEN's. we as parents have to fight to get the help our children need as it is, please dont make us stress and worry even more by taking away the one thing that keeps us parents going....OUR TA'S!!!!.

We send our children to school knowing that budgets/time/resources are stretched, my children are still trying to catch up on curriculam work (2/3 years behind ) and my only saving grace is those amazing teaching assistants who give mine and other children a chance in life!!!! teachers are great, but cannot always give there time to our children, due to high demands put upon them. Teaching assistants have a raw deal as it is, they need praising, and recognition for a hard job, not being made to feel worthless!! THEY ARE A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, WITHOUT THEM OUR CHILDREN,TEACHERS, AND PARENTS WILL SUFFER!!!!

  6. T A's are an invaluable part of school life, for pupils teachers, & parents alike. We need more of them not less as those we have are stretched as it is, and with more children with special needs being intergrated into our schools its becoming harder by the day.

  7. Inclusion has increased the need for Tas. Autism, global delay, physical, sight and hearing impaired pupils are all in the mainstream school. Who else is going to notice the abused children. Those who are unable to access the curriculum without support. Who will take the time to notice them?

  8. What is this new government thinking. I am one of the few male Senior TA's working in a Middle School, where I have been for the past 14 years plus. Without TAs working in our schools, teachers would never be able to manage. This comment has come not just from me but from many of my teaching colleagues. Gone are the days where we just used to assist children with reading, and doing mundane jobs around the school. We are now an integral part of the school day. TAs have a vast range of knowledge and expertise and this should be encouraged not discarded by the government. We sometimes get to know the children far better than some of our teachers!! We have many children in our school with SEN. Who will look after these children if there are no TAs? TAs work hard to improve their qualifcations. Where else will they be able to use this extra gained knowledge and expertise if there are no jobs for them?Instead of being faceless suits who sit in a government office, may I respectfully invite these ministers who make their decisions working only from papers in front of them, to actually go out into the schools in the communities and see for themselves the work that TAs around the country undertake. It makes me extremely angry that once again, decisions are made without proper research and consultation purely as a means to save money and with no thought to the detrimental effect this will have on our childrens education. They are already making a massive mistake in changing from the three tier system which works exceedingly well in our area, into a two tier system. Once again, this decision was made totally against what the parents and children within our schools wanted. DON'T get rid of our TAs too. You will regret it in the long run.

  9. TA's are vital to the schooling system. Without us to alleviate much of the workload of the teachers the classrooms in this country (I feel I can comment for others) classrooms would not run so smoothly. I have constantly updated my training and feel now (without seeming to blow my own trumpet) that my school would struggle without me there. I cover classes (HLTA), teach PE to cover PPA (NPECTS), support individuals, teach small booster groups and generally get sent to help wherever I am required. I love my job but training is essential to keep me up to date with whats new. Teachers get training so value us too.

  10. my sister is a ta an she is briliant in what she dose. i have three siblings who me an my sister care for that have sen's and without the ta's help they would not be achieving what they are now. one teacher between let's say 30 pupils is not enough. dont scrap ta's for the sake of saving a bit of cash keep them and save our childrens education. think of the children who need that extra help from a ta. ta's are important to the teachers an the pupils an the individual schools across england.
